Nairobi Commute Stalls as Floods Cripple Mombasa Road

Nairobi, Kenya – Motorists in Nairobi faced a gridlocked commute this morning as torrential downpours triggered severe flooding, particularly along Mombasa Road near Sultan Hamud. The critical Mombasa-Nairobi highway, a vital link between the capital and the coast, was reportedly impassable for several hours.

The flooding resulted from overflowing waters of the River Sultan, which breached its banks after days of continuous rain. Traffic screeched to a halt as drivers navigated the flooded sections with trepidation. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

This incident marks the second time in a month that the Sultan Hamud area has been ravaged by disruptive flooding. The situation underscores the vulnerability of Nairobi’s infrastructure to heavy rainfall.

Commutes Disrupted, Traffic Police Intervene

Reports indicate that traffic police intervened to manage the chaos and restore traffic flow. However, commuters undoubtedly experienced significant delays.

Stay Safe During Floods:

  • Never drive through flooded roads: Even shallow water can be deceptively powerful and sweep away vehicles.
  • Turn around and find an alternate route: If you encounter flooding while driving, prioritize your safety and find another way.
  • Stay informed about weather conditions: Be aware of weather forecasts and avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding.
  • Evacuate to higher ground immediately: If you’re caught in rising floodwaters, evacuate to higher ground without delay.

Let’s hope the rains relent and Nairobi’s transportation system swiftly returns to normalcy. Stay safe, Nairobi!
